Heart ultrasound (Echocardiogram)
In connection with regular checks at child health clinics and inflammations, heart murmurs are often detected in children, but the majority of its causes are harmless; so-called flow sounds or physiological murmurs. However, because some congenital, structural heart defects are not discovered until a child grows older, any murmur should always be taken seriously. The children’s cardiologist or paediatrician decides whether an echocardiogram is needed.
The echocardiogram is a painless examination, and it takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the patient and findings. The examination is performed in a darkened room, which has to be mentioned to the child in advance.
