Tonsil operations

Tonsil operations are performed because of recurrent bacterial inflammations and/or the large size of the tonsils. The large size of the tonsils may cause obstructive sleep apnea, in which case the removal of the palatine tonsils and the pharyngeal tonsil have to be considered. In addition, children who require orthodontics and speech therapy benefit from the removal of large tonsils.

Tonsillectomies are safely performed as day surgical operations. The operation is performed in the morning, and experienced anaesthesiologists are responsible for the general anaesthesia and post-operative monitoring with pain treatment. Children may be discharged from hospital already in the afternoon.

The Pikkujätti hospital units located at Tapiola, Itäkeskus and Kerava have operating rooms in which day surgical procedures are performed.
A referral for the procedure must be written by a specialist in ear, nose and throat diseases.
